What injuries and diseases are covered?
In most instances, the Workers' Compensation Act covers:
- injuries that are caused, in whole or in part, by the employee's work or that happen while the employee is on the job
- repetitive-motion injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome
- a stroke, heart attack, or other physical problem caused by work
- a pre-existing condition that was made worse by work (if the employee can prove that his work aggravated the condition).
The Act does not cover injuries or medical problems that occur during an employer-sponsored recreation program, such as a softball game or bowling league, unless the employee was ordered to participate. It also doesn't cover the employee during participation in an office party or picnic.
