Which employees are covered?
Virtually every employee who is hired, injured, or whose employment is located in Illinois is covered by the Workers' Compensation Act from the moment they begin their jobs without having to do anything.
Exceptions include "duly appointed" members of a police department in any city whose population exceeds 200,000. Also, duly appointed members of a fire department in any city whose population exceeds 200,000 are covered by the Act only for disfigurement claims. The good news for police and fire department employees not covered by the Act is that they are entitled to similar benefits arising out of the Illinois Pension Code.
